Adelphi’s Carbon Markets and Pricing team
Our Carbon Markets and Pricing Team is one of the world's foremost knowledge hubs supporting the global spread of carbon pricing as a key tool to reduce greenhouse gas emissions cost-efficiently.
We provide research and public policy advice on the design and implementation of carbon markets and carbon pricing instruments in projects funded by governments and international and development organizations, including the European Commission, the World Bank and others. We also staff the secretariats of the International Carbon Action Partnership and Carbon Pricing in the Americas (CPA), facilitating and shaping international cooperation and experience exchange around compliance carbon pricing systems worldwide.
At the same time, carbon pricing faces a challenging political moment. Governments operating emissions trading systems must navigate growing public and industry resistance to carbon costs, as well as pressure to protect competitiveness. Designing systems that are environmentally effective, economically efficient, and politically durable is one of the defining challenges of climate governance today. This makes the work of our team more important than ever.
The coming years promise to be an exciting and pivotal time for carbon markets, as ever more countries actively prepare to establish carbon pricing instruments to help implement their commitments under the Paris Agreement.
The International Carbon Action Partnership
The International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP) is an international forum of more than 40 governments and public authorities from around the world that have implemented or are planning to implement domestic emissions trading systems (ETS). Founded in 2007, ICAP supports member jurisdictions in sharing best practices and advancing the state of the art on ETS design and implementation. ICAP's work focuses on three pillars: technical dialogue, knowledge sharing, and capacity-building activities relating to emissions trading. adelphi hosts the ICAP Secretariat, which is based in Berlin.
