Postdoc position (TV-L E13 - 100%) Water use efficiency and water balance calculations for different tree species and forest stands

Professur für Wald- und Agroforstsysteme

Beschreibung:

Efficient forest mixtures of future-oriented tree species to improve water balance - Complementarity vs. Competition (ComCom)

Project background:
The research activity focuses on promising tree species mixtures whose water balance efficiencies and drought stress tolerances will be analyzed and quantified. The acquired knowledge contributes to the improvement of the water balance of forest ecosystems and the adaptation of forests to climate change. Thus, the project directly serves risk minimization, ecological stability, biodiversity as well as sustainability of forest systems. The research will investigate:

  • Forest system interactions dominated by oak, beech, pine and Douglas fir
  • Forest structures between mixtures and monocultures (laser scanning data)
  • Growth increment and drought stress (core samples, stable isotopes)
  • Water use and drought stress responses (xylem sap flow)
  • Hydraulic redistribution effects in different forest stands

The research project is comprised of field-based sub-projects with 1 researcher (PhD candidate) each, and a sub-project with 1 Postdoc. The researchers will be working together closely as ComCom research group.

Who we are:
You will work closely with two research groups:

  • Professorship for Forest and Agroforest Systems, Technical University of Munich
  • Professorship for Land Surface-Atmosphere Interactions, AG Ecophysiology of Plants, Technical University of Munich

What we offer:

  • An innovative working environment at the university and campus.
  • Access to modern facilities and infrastructure at a strong research department.
  • Scientific exchange, flexibility, independence and self-responsibility.
  • Extensive options of vocational training (meetings, workshops, conferences).
  • A chance to receive a doctoral degree and deepen your scientific skills.
  • 1 x TV-L E13 (100%), 2 x TV-L E13 (65%), initially limited to 3 years.

Topic:
Water use efficiency and water balance calculations for different tree species and forest stands

Job description:
The Postdoc researcher will support and instruct the PhD candidates during project planning and field work, alongside the PIs Grams and Annighöfer. The Postdoc will also implement the experimental setup together with the PhD candidates and consolidate the data collected in the project to build water use models. This will require extensive field and lab work. The position will be located at the Professorship for Forest and Agroforest Systems, but represents the connecting element between the subprojects.

Anforderungen:

The candidate we are looking for ideally has:

  • Track record of long-term field-based forest research
  • Strong scientific background in forestry and ecophysiology
  • Experience in sap-flow measurements
  • Verifiable training in teaching, supervising, and working with students
  • Cooperative and collaborative skills and own research ideas
  • Enthusiasm for team, field, and lab work

Job requirements:

  • Excellent doctors’ degree in related field
  • German-speaking with very good knowledge of English
  • Pronounced scientific skills with a strong scientific record
  • Driving license valid for Germany

Starting date:
01.03.2022 (full-time 100%, initially limited to 3 years)
