Smart tracer techniques in hydrogeology/ geohydrology

Applications are invited for a three-year position at the Geoscience Center, Department of Applied Geology, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. It is open to PhD students and Postdoctoral researchers. Initially the position is part-time (75%) with the option of an upgrade to full-time employment.

The position is funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG), within the project “Kinetic interface sensitive (KIS) tracers – Emerging smart tracer techniques for investigating the dynamics of fluid-fluid interfacial area in multiphase porous media systems”.

The successful candidate will conduct fundamental research in Hydrogeology / Geohydrology, which implies the development of experimental and mathematical techniques for the characterization, monitoring and modelling of reactive transport processes in geological reservoirs using the novel KIS tracers. The main focus is the development of reactive tracer experimental methods to study multiphase flow processes in porous materials and for the quantification of the fluid-fluid interfacial area. The work involves both numerical modelling and laboratory experiments.

The highly motivated candidate is expected to hold a MSc or PhD degree or equivalent in a relevant Earth Sciences / Engineering discipline such as hydrogeology, geohydrology, petroleum or water resources engineering, physics, applied mathematics or a related field.
This post is designed to foster young researchers and scientists and give the successful applicant the opportunity to pursue a PhD or post-doctoral qualification. The preferred starting date is planned for 15th March 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary will be paid in accordance with the German TV-L, salary group E13. Regular working hours are currently 39.8 hours per week (100%).
  • Theoretical knowledge of multiphase flow and reactive transport in porous media,
  • Numerical modelling expertise of two-phase flow at pore-scale and/or macro-scale,
  • Experience with numerical model development and modelling of processes in geological reservoirs,
  • Laboratory work experience and willingness to conduct laboratory experiments involving n-octane/water fluid systems,
  • Knowledge of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical and chemical (THMC) hydrogeological processes is beneficial,
  • Programming skills (MATLAB or C++) are beneficial,
  • Flexibility to travel and perform experiments in partner university laboratories (e.g., Stuttgart, Uppsala),
  • Reliability, diligence, ability to integrate into a team and the capacity to work independently.
