BioESSHealth Modelling of forest beetle communities with climate and forest structure

The projections of the recent UN Emissions Gap Report (2017) shows a large gap between the emission reductions necessary to limit global warming to 1.5° - 2° C and the likely emission reductions from full implementation of countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions. The projections further imply different levels of transition from a fossil- to a bio- based economy. Forest is main contributor of the transition to a bio-economy, so the different projections also mean different future forest uses. As forestry is a key reason for global species losses, the projections also mean different impacts on future biodiversity. Within the EU project BioESSHealth we will establish a joint work on different scales evaluating socioeconomics, forestry and conservation for different scenarios of emission reduction across Europe.

To answer the research question within the project "Do forest and climate variables, species traits and species -species associations explain community structure of beetles in European forests?”, we are seeking a highly motivated PostDoc with a PhD in statistics, but interest in applied ecology or conservation, or with a PhD in ecology but deep interest in statistical modelling. We expect a strong background in R (and Matlab), experience in Bayesian methods and in scientific writing in English.

Salary and conditions:

Salary and benefits are according to public service positions in Bavarian (TV -L, 100% ). The planned duration of the position is 2.5 years. The vacancy can be filled as part time as well. The candidate is expected to work in the team of the lab of Prof. Müller ( and in team of the interdisciplinary project BioESSHealth. The position can optionally be located at the campus of the University Würzburg, the Ecological Fieldstation Fabrikschleichach in Northern Bavaria or in the administration of the oldest German Nationalpark (Bavarian Forest), in Grafenau ( We offer a strong research environment, combining ecological theory, saproxylic beetle ecology, conservation biology and advanced statistics. The Fieldstation and the Nationalpark provide a unique natural landscape with many opportunities for outdoor activities. Female scientists are particularly encouraged to apply.
