PhD positions in Ecology (part time 65%, 3 years)

Universität Koblenz-Landau

The Faculty 7: Natural and Environmental Sciences invites applications for two PhD positions in Ecology (part time 65%, 3 years) at the iES Landau, Institute for Environmental Sciences, Landau, Germany. The positions are part of the research training group SystemLink - Crossing boundaries: Propagation of in-stream environmental alterations to adjacent terrestrial ecosystems funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG GRK2360, German Research Foundation). The appointment is for 3 years and salary will be according to 65% of the German public service salary scale TV-L 13.

Streams affect riparian habitats in various ways, e.g. through abiotic transport of nutrients and pollutants, and by providing food to terrestrial predators in the form of emerging aquatic insects. Both PhD projects focus on the degradation of riparian food webs by chemical pol-lution and invasive riparian plants. The first study (bottom-up effects) will investigate effects on the soil microbial community along with the associated vegetation and arthropods. Microbial communities will be characterized with DNA metabarcoding and effects tested in a field survey and in mesocosm experiments. The second study (food web ecology) will focus on the effects of altered availability of aquatic insect subsidies to the terrestrial food web. The diet of riparian spiders will be investigated using stable isotope analysis and molecular gut content analysis (metabarcoding). As members of the research training group System-Link - Crossing boundaries the PhD candidates will work in small teams of PhD students, have access to state of the art equipment and collaborate within the young and interdiscipli-nary team of researchers at the Institute for Environmental Sciences. An individualized course program will complement the research work.

Successful candidates hold a degree (M.Sc.) in a relevant field (e.g., biology, ecology, environmental sciences, ecotoxicology) and are fluent in English language. They are interested in interdisciplinary research at the interface between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and have skills in several of the following topics: invasion ecology, arthropod biodiversity, food-web ecology, plant-fungi interactions, soil microbial ecology, stable isotope analysis and DNA-metabarcoding. A strong motivation to work in teams, to publish research articles, and to finish a PhD thesis within three years is needed. It is the policy of the University Koblenz-Landau to increase the percentage of female employees. If equally qualified, preference will be given to female applicants. Disabled candidates are given priority, if equally qualified. International candidates are highly encouraged to apply.
