The Ecological Field Station Fabrikschleichach examines applied and fundamental questions in forest ecology and nature conservation in temperate forest ecosystems. Our overall research aim is to better understand the interaction of forest ecosystem functioning, biodiversity and forest management in a changing world. Around one quarter of all forest species depend directly or indirectly on dead wood. Microclimate and host tree species are two main factors determining this biodiversity. However, it remains unclear how these factors drive biodiversity in different trophic levels, particularly for groups of species difficult to determine.

The planned project will analyze biodiversity of different species groups across trophic levels in dead wood using existing sequencing data. The existing large datasets warrant rapid publishing opportunities. Moreover, we offer excellent collaborations to leading experts in the field of community ecology, statistics and deadwood ecology.

We offer a relaxing working atmosphere in the heart of the Steigerwald forest (for more information please see The earliest starting date for the position is April 2020, whereas the exact starting date is negotiable. The position is limited to 36 months (TV-L, 100%), with possibility of extension depending on performance and the development of the funding situation. The vacancy can be filled as part time as well.

The successful candidate (m/f/d) holds a PhD degree in ecological sciences, bioinformatic or a related field and should have a significant publication record as well as significant skills in R programming language.

The successful candidate (m/f/d) uses existing datasets, professional networks, and long-term experimental field data to investigate environmental drivers on biodiversity in dead wood. A research background in microbial ecology is of advantage. Experience and interest in arthropods are of advantage.
