Aeco is a start-up that aims to become one of the leading private, collaborative developers and financiers of peatland restoration projects across Europe, and beyond.

Why peatlands?

Healthy peatlands are crucial carbon stores, containing nearly 30% of global soil organic carbon despite covering only 3% of the world's land. Degraded peatlands release this carbon, contributing to around 5% of total global emissions. Restoring them is essential to combat the climate crisis, support biodiversity, and manage water systems. In Europe, over 50% of peatlands are degraded, and the current restoration pace is insufficient to meet climate goals. In Germany, for example, we would need 200 years to rewet all peatlands at the current speed, while we only have 15-20 years.

How do we make a difference?

In a sector dominated by subsidies and slow-moving public approaches, aeco brings private sector dynamics and collaboration to incentivize stakeholders. We cover all implementation and certification costs and share carbon certificate revenues with landowners. Farming can continue with adaptations to rising water tables. Our expertise includes building strategic partnerships, project evaluation, planning, supervision, monitoring, certificate sales, and funding.

We have already rewetted our first peatlands, are preparing 10+ projects in 4 countries and have a growing pipeline of potential project sites across northern Europe. We are also developing new carbon and biodiversity methodologies and a state-of-the-art remote MRV system for peatland restoration.

Warum Moore?

Gesunde Moore sind entscheidende Kohlenstoffspeicher und enthalten fast 30% des weltweiten organischen Bodenkohlenstoffs, obwohl sie nur 3% der Landfläche ausmachen. Zerstörte Moore setzen diesen Kohlenstoff frei und tragen damit zu rund 5% der weltweiten Gesamtemissionen bei. Ihre Wiederherstellung ist unerlässlich, um die Klimakrise zu bekämpfen, die Artenvielfalt zu unterstützen und Wassersysteme zu regulieren. In Europa sind über 50% der Moore zerstört, und das derzeitige Tempo der Wiedervernässung reicht nicht aus, um die Klimaziele zu erreichen. In Deutschland würden wir beispielsweise bei der aktuellen Geschwindigkeit 200 Jahre benötigen, um alle Moore wiederzuvernässen – und wir haben nur 15-20 Jahre Zeit.

Wie machen wir einen Unterschied?

In einem Sektor, der von Subventionen und langsam agierenden öffentlichen Ansätzen dominiert wird, bringt aeco Dynamik und Zusammenarbeit aus dem Privatsektor ein, um Anreize für Beteiligte zu schaffen. Wir übernehmen alle Kosten für die Umsetzung und Zertifizierung und teilen die Einnahmen aus Kohlenstoffzertifikaten mit den Landbesitzern. Landwirtschaft kann unter Anpassung an den steigenden Wasserstand weiter betrieben werden. Unsere Expertise umfasst den Aufbau strategischer Partnerschaften, die Projektevaluierung, Planung, Überwachung, das Monitoring, den Verkauf von Zertifikaten und die Finanzierung.

Wir haben bereits unsere ersten Moorflächen wiedervernässt, bereiten mehr als 10 Projekte in 4 Ländern vor und verfügen über eine wachsende Pipeline potenzieller Projektflächen in Nordeuropa. Zudem entwickeln wir neue Kohlenstoff- und Biodiversitätsmethodiken sowie ein modernes Remote-MRV-System (Monitoring, Reporting & Verification) für die Moorrestaurierung.

Your tasks

We need your expertise as a restoration specialist to scale up our peatland rewetting projects under various carbon standards to new partners, regions and countries. More precisely, we need you to handle the following tasks:

• Data analysis & evaluation: Process and analyse ecological datasets (vegetation, peat, hydrology); Handle geospatial datasets and apply statistical methods to support project site evaluation and prepare outputs for GIS integration.
• Project documentation & compliance: Support the interface between the peatland and carbon team by contributing to carbon project documentation and ensuring that all data analyses comply with the requirements of the applied carbon standard and regulatory frameworks.
• Sourcing, Screening, and Assessing Sites: Support the identification and evaluation of suitable carbon project sites across Europe using remote data, GIS tools, and on-site visits (incl. vegetation surveys and peat coring), in collaboration with our team and our regional partners
• Project Development and Implementation: Support us and our partners through technical rewetting and restoration planning activities to ensure effectiveness and integrity across all our projects
• Standardised Rewetting Process Development: Contribute to the development and optimisation of a standardised, scalable process for peatland rewetting, integrating scientific, technical and practical considerations

Feasibility Studies and Planning: Coordinate and support feasibility studies, permit planning, and technical implementation processes with our partners and third parties

Deine Aufgaben

Wir brauchen deine Expertise als Restaurationsspezialist:in, um unsere Moorwiedervernässungsprojekte unter verschiedenen Kohlenstoffstandards auf neue Partner, Regionen und Länder zu skalieren. Genauer gesagt übernimmst du folgende Aufgaben:

• Datenanalyse & Bewertung: Aufbereitung und Analyse ökologischer Datensätze (Vegetation, Torf, Hydrologie); Umgang mit Geodaten und Anwendung statistischer Methoden zur Bewertung von Projektflächen sowie Aufbereitung von Outputs zur Integration in GIS.
• Projektdokumentation & Compliance: Unterstützung der Schnittstelle zwischen dem Moor- und Carbon-Team durch Beiträge zur Carbon-Projektdokumentation und Sicherstellung, dass alle Datenanalysen den Anforderungen des jeweiligen Carbon-Standards sowie regulatorischen Rahmenbedingungen entsprechen.
• Identifizierung, Screening & Bewertung von Flächen: Unterstützung bei der Identifizierung und Bewertung geeigneter Carbon-Projektflächen in Europa mithilfe von Ferndaten, GIS-Tools und Vor-Ort-Besuchen (inkl. Vegetationsaufnahmen und Torfkernbohrungen) in Zusammenarbeit mit unserem Team und regionalen Partnern.
• Projektentwicklung & Umsetzung: Unterstützung von uns und unseren Partnern bei technischen Planungsaktivitäten für Vernässung und Renaturierung, um Wirksamkeit und Integrität in allen Projekten sicherzustellen.
• Entwicklung standardisierter Vernässungsprozesse: Mitwirkung an der Entwicklung und Optimierung eines standardisierten, skalierbaren Prozesses für Moorvernässung unter Einbezug wissenschaftlicher, technischer und praktischer Aspekte.
• Machbarkeitsstudien & Planung: Koordination und Unterstützung von Machbarkeitsstudien, Genehmigungsplanung und technischen Umsetzungsprozessen mit Partnern und externen Dienstleister:innen.

Anforderungen

• Background in Ecology, Environmental Science, Geosciences or a similar discipline (BSc/MSc)
• Basic knowledge about peatlands including their ecology, hydrology and vegetation; alternatively, a solid understanding of ecosystems in general, combined with experience working with ecological datasets
• Proficiency in using GIS tools (e.g. QGIS) for site assessment, project planning, and monitoring
• Proficiency in data analysis using Google Sheets/ Excel, RStudio, Python or similar
• Strong autonomous problem-solving skills while working in a fast-paced environment
• English communication skills (German is a plus)
• High motivation to contribute to nature based solutions fighting multiple environmental crises

Optional:

• Experience with peatland rewetting or knowledge of rewetting techniques
• Experience with carbon emissions assessments, e.g. based on GEST or soil moisture classes, or with the quantification of other ecosystem services beyond carbon

• Hintergrund in Ökologie, Umweltwissenschaften, Geowissenschaften oder einem vergleichbaren Fachgebiet (BSc/MSc)
• Grundkenntnisse über Moore (Ökologie, Hydrologie, Vegetation); alternativ ein solides Verständnis von Ökosystemen allgemein kombiniert mit Erfahrung in der Arbeit mit ökologischen Datensätzen
• Sicherer Umgang mit GIS-Tools (z. B. QGIS) zur Flächenbewertung, Projektplanung und Monitoring
• Erfahrung in der Datenanalyse mit Google Sheets/Excel, RStudio, Python oder vergleichbaren Tools
• Ausgeprägte Fähigkeit zum selbstständigen Problemlösen in einem dynamischen, schnelllebigen Umfeld
• Sehr gute Englischkenntnisse in der Kommunikation (Deutsch ist ein Plus)
• Hohe Motivation, zu Nature-based Solutions beizutragen, die mehrere Umweltkrisen gleichzeitig adressieren

Optional:

• Erfahrung mit Moorvernässung oder Kenntnisse von Vernässungstechniken
• Erfahrung mit Emissionsabschätzungen (z. B. auf Basis von GEST oder Bodenfeuchteklassen) oder mit der Quantifizierung weiterer Ökosystemleistungen über Kohlenstoff hinaus
