As a think tank, Agora Industry is pursuing the goal of achieving a climate-neutral industry sector. With 30 employees at four locations worldwide, we combine research, dialogue, and public relations in our daily work to find answers to crucial questions. In doing so, we work closely with partners in numerous countries, and we act independently and free of economic or party-political interests.

An increasing number of other countries and regions in the world have decided to become climate neutral by 2050 at the latest. This implies the industrial sector reaching climate neutrality within just one generation as part of the broader transformation. While creating tremendous opportunities for investments and clean development, immense efforts are needed to reach net-zero climate objectives, especially for energy-intensive industries such as chemicals.

Project Lead Global Chemicals Transformation (gn)

Full-time or part-time (minimum 32 hours), based in Berlin

The chemical industry is a highly innovative sector with a high energy demand, making it strongly dependant on fossil fuels. They are used for energy supply and are also transformed into a range of diverse products, from basic materials to more refined and specialised ones. The need to mitigate emissions, reduce pollution, and address the disposal of final products have been key drivers of the sector's transformation. In addition, the disruption to the oil and gas markets is putting the industry under structural pressure and accelerating the need for transformation. By analysing the entire value chain for chemical products, we provide recommendations that aim to favour resilience and competitiveness, address bottlenecks and propose key strategies to accelerate the sector’s transformation at a global level.

This position is part of Agora Industry’s International Collaboration and Markets team, working closely with a wider group of industry experts in various regions.

Aufgaben

Leading Agora’s activities for the global chemicals transformation, and representing Agora towards stakeholders and decision makers as well as multilateral fora and global networks;
Work with regional teams to support the formulation of policy proposals that are relevant to the chemical sector transformation’s agenda and contribute to stakeholder outreach, where relevant;
Developing and implementing a strategy at Agora for a successful transformation of the global chemical sector, considering the whole value chain of chemical products;
Coordinating research projects, technology overviews and designing policy proposals with a focus on technical solutions, industrial policy instruments, economics and trade regulations. This includes the moderation of internal and external processes with various stakeholders and the overseeing of technical work performed by consultants;
Leading outreach work, public speaking and engaging in international debates on the chemicals transition e.g. on social media;
Initiating and implementing new projects, in close consultation with partners, founders and external technical consultants;
Contribute to the setup and implementation of projects at regional level, in coordination with regional teams;
Managing project budgets; and actively contributing to Agora’s institutional and strategy development;
Leading fundraising activities for the further development of the programme on the transformation of the global chemical sector;
Taking responsibility for mentoring and guiding more junior colleagues;
Closely cooperating with colleagues within Agora as well as through our international partner network.

Anforderungen

A strong desire to actively shape the global industry transformation;
A master’s degree in engineering, economics, finance, business, political science or similar;
At least 8 years work experience in or with the chemical industry or in the field of the decarbonisation of the chemical sector;
Profound expertise in the chemical sector transformation, including technical solutions, policy instruments, and trade regulations;
Deeply understanding around production processes in the chemical sector including refining, inorganic production (ammonia, sulfuric acid, etc.) and organic production (polymerization, solvents, etc.);
A significant network relevant for the industrial transition, and the ability to be a highly credible representative toward Agora’s partners and policy-makers at a senior level;
Experience in guiding complex cooperation projects with multiple (international) stakeholders and networks;
Experience with managing grants and budgets;
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, ability to present analytical and research material;
Willingness to travel internationally;
Fluency in English; other language skills are a plus.
