We have an office in Melbourne, Australia. In Germany, we have been present since 2023 and are now building a team to participate in European research projects and work with European clients. Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated Research Software Engineer to join us in Germany, who will bring insights and skills to a collaborative and international environment. You will initially work mostly with Mika (physicist turned research software engineer, managing director, based in Berlin) with regular contact with the Melbourne team to deliver ongoing research projects while building our European team. In the research projects, we provide greenhouse gas concentrations for the world’s best climate models within the World Climate Research Programme’s (WCRP’s) Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) and the European Commission’s (EC’s) Destination Earth (DestinE) frameworks. You will also be part of our team delivering best-in-class future emissions and temperature projections according to nationally determined contributions (NDCs). In all of our work, we use agile and robust collaborative software engineering practices, including version control and rigorous testing, to develop reliable software embodying the latest science.
What you will do:
Implement climate research software in a team:
- Build new features into our system for the assessment of NDCs; including working in the backend Python library as well as the Postgres database and React user frontends.
- Contribute to the maintenance and development of the primap2 historical emissions analysis Python library.
- Improve our Python pipeline for the creation of greenhouse gas concentration inputs for climate models.
Work with scientists, economists, and policy analysts:
- Understand the needs of our internal and external users, who are scientists, economists, and policy analysts, enabling them to answer their science or policy questions.
- Comprehensively document our software to ensure it is useful.
- Contribute to scientific publications and technical publications.
Contribute to building our German team:
- Participate in hiring more team members.
- Supervise new colleagues and help them grow into research software engineers.
- Contribute to new research and client proposals.
Develop your and the team’s research software engineering skills:
- Further develop your research software engineering skills, with a view to being able to contribute to Climate Resource’s other products and tools across the whole technology stack.
- Further enhance our quality assurance and software design methods, and learn with the entire team.
Qualifications:
- Professional experience in software development, ideally in a scientific context, including package development and testing and the development of reproducible workflows.
- Ability to work as part of a team in a multicultural environment.
- A proactive, communicative approach to problem-solving and willingness to take on new challenges.
- Ability to communicate in English, both written and verbal, to support working in a remote and largely asynchronous work environment.
- Formal qualification in either (climate) science, economics, or software engineering.
It’s a plus if you have:
- Experience leading a software development or research team.
- Experience in climate science or climate economics.
- Experience working with climate and emissions data.
- Experience developing in the Python language.
- Experience working on the frontend, in particular using React.
- German language skills.
For us, the most important thing is your willingness to learn. Most members of our research software engineering team don’t have a degree in computer science. Many of us started as researchers who successfully moved into research software engineering. Location:
We hope to build our German team in Berlin, so prefer if you can work in the co-working space in Berlin at least 1 to 2 days per week; however, we are also considering strong applicants who work remotely and are willing to meet within Germany for a week about 3 times per year.
Salary:
The gross annual salary will be commensurate with experience. The expected employee gross annual salary range is EUR 62,000-78,000 full-time equivalent (40 hours per week) per year, pro rata for the time fraction agreed.
